It’s finally here. Thecagenews.com crew has spent many sleepless nights poring over footage and records and watching training sessions to peg the best of the best in Utah’s MMA scene. After much deliberation, we have compiled a list of talent that we feel fits the billing, as the top pound for pound fighters the Wild West has to offer.

1. DaMarques “Darkness” Johnson

Timing is everything, and Darkness is on fire. With a streak of several quality wins and more important matchups on the horizon, this Jeremy Horn prodigy will likely be on the big stage by this time next year. Unreal striking ability, superb submissions, and above all, a newly clear perspective make DaMarques Johnson the most dangerous fighter in Utah. Did we forget to mention Darkness has just sign with MMA super agent Monte Cox?

2. Steven Siler

This young dark horse earns the number two spot by taking on the best and coming out on top. Two more monstrous opponents loom in the near future, but the phenom is confident and ready to prove he is the best. This star of the Mori Academy is slick on the ground and possesses all the tools to make it big. With youth on his side, Siler has perhaps the greatest “upside” of any fighter to make this list.

3. Derek “The Gentleman” Downey

Don’t count on knee surgery to keep the Gentleman down for too long. The king of the castle in Utah’s stacked Middleweight division will stay on top after coming out of retirement earlier this year using world class submission skills and brutal ground and pound. Downey boasts a gaudy record, extremely well rounded skill set, and more confidence than Tito Ortiz. With the Throwdown team behind him, this consummate family man has all the right tools to make a run at the big leagues

4. Steven “Razor” Sharp

The fan favorite of Utah MMA is a rarity in that his fighting prowess actually lives up to his skill as a showman. His return to the Utah scene was rendered anticlimactic due to an injury, but a highly anticipated matchup between the Razor and Siler should be all that it promises come September. This pink-haired wonder is the pride of Absolute MMA and a pioneer who helped put Utah MMA on the map. Few holes in his game and a sick work ethic solidify his spot among the best.

5. James “Birddog” Birdsley

Love him or hate him, Birddog is a fighter to the bone. Despite a recent slow period, Birddog rounds out the list by virtue of his win list. The 30+ names that have fallen to the Birddog’s bite include a who’s who of Utah’s lighter division fighters. A never-say-die attitude and gritty fight style make Birddog a formidable opponent for any local fighter, which may explain why it is so hard for him to find fights in this own backyard. One of the most impressive fighters to come out of the Elite Performance stable, James Birdsley was just plain born to fight.

There you have it folks. The pound for pound best in the greatest MMA state in America. Fists flew, people cried, but thecagenews.com staff is confident that we got it right. No favoritism or pity votes here, only the baddest of the bad. And if you are wondering how Razor edged out The Birddog on this list but not in the weight class rankings, well that can be explained by Birdsley’s recent loss. This is MMA, and like it or not you are only as good as your last fight.

Court is the best fighter in Utah. He owns me. I cant believe I got my ass kicked by him. I am going to start fighting girls now. Thats my best bet

Siler is definitely evolving leaps and bounds every fight.

His win over Olly is huge.

But I still think he is outside the lb for lb Top 5... for now.

I'll give my vote if he can convincingly beat Razor.

I think it should be noted that those first few fights against Olly and Kavika Siler was only 18 maybe 19 years old. In the last year or so Siler has been unstoppable. He has definitley earned that number 2 spot.

Hey Eufus in Olly's last 10 fights he's like 3-7. Everyone who made the list has lost 2 or less of their last ten. All those wins you are hyping up happened 2-3 years ago.

Siler is good and getting better everytime he fights...yet evertime he fights he seems to be the underdog. Either way i think he does belong on the top 5 list just not number 2. And with the pound for pound number 1 spot... gotta go with DD.

Does Siler beating Olly faster than anyone including Birddog change the doubters opinion on how good he is?
« eufus wrote on Saturday, Aug 16 at 08:51 PM »
WOW NP OLLY BRADSTREET? Biased! Didn't he beat both siler 3 times and Birdsley once. Pound for Pound ollys the best

Its going to be interesting to see BD against John Sargent. His record isnt very good, but he looked pretty tough against Razor. I wonder if it will be a lackluster wrestler vs. wrestler BD domination?

It should be noted on Siler that many thought Travis Marx to be the best 145 lb fighter in the State before Siler beat him. Siler is on a six fight win streak also beating Matt May, Dan Berry, Lance Gorman, John Sharp, and a undefeated College Wrestler in Colorado.

Yeah, that slipping into a submission sure does suck. I never said Panter was garbage either. I said if you are going to go all the way back to 2006, you better count his loss to Wright then too. He wasn't winning the fight before he "slipped" into a submission either.

But hey, maybe he can beat Lucambio 3 more times and become the greatest in the world because beating Lucambio is all you seem to be basing it on.

No your post doesn't make any sense. DD has had one fight in like two years and it was against....uh... oh that's right Tim Panter. STFU you stupid idiot. If Panter is garbage, how does DD get a better rating.

As far as McGhee goes, if you watch the video, you fukcin monkey, in part two on youtube at 4:45 Johnson goes down because he slips. Court doesn't touch him; he just fall down and it gives McGhee top side position to where he finishes the submission. So yeah he got lucky. Either way, I think Court belongs on the list but below Demarques, but I'm sure they took him off because he signed with Elite XC.

In the end Pound for Pound isn't about who can beat up everybody but who is most dominant in his weight class.

You're a fukcin idiot someguy.

My post makes no sense? Really? You're going to mention Panter all the way back from 10/06 but not mention his loss to Wright his next fight after that? Ok...that's some nice selective memory you have if you want to go back that far. The only reason he lost to McGee was because he slipped? That's some bullshit and you know it. That fight is on youtube so go watch it again without your head up your butt. Downey should be above Demarques and so should McGee.

I'm also a little confused how Olly got left off because he moved to Vegas for a bit, but Sharpe has 1 fight in Utah in the last couple years against an injured Brenner and gets put on. The criteria seems a bit off.

I'm going to have to agree with the others in that I don't think Siler should be in the Pound for Pound top 5. Beating Marx is definitely a big feat and deserves respect, but I don't see how that puts him into the top 5 or even the top 10 for that matter. The best point made is that he has had two serious rivals in the past in Kavika and Oli and he is the loser in both of those series. 0-3 to Oli and 1-2 with Kavika. Even though Kavika's on his Mission(I think)and you guys thought Bradstreet was done here, I still don't see him at the top. Pound for Pound has to do with dominance and Siler is merely riding a three win streak right now. He has yet to prove that he is dominant. Maybe if he can beat Oli this week and beat T-Train again, but not right now.Downey, Sharp, and Birdsley are all much better right now.

With that said, I think he is talented and has a bright future.

Hey Someguy, STFU. Your post makes no sense. Demarques is obviously the #1 p-4-p fighter at the moment. He has dominant wins over Lucambio, Nitsuma, and Tim Panter. He's easily the top dog. Who are these 2 guys? McGHEE? He got lucky when Darkness slipped.

Now Siler at #2 doesn't make sense at all. What about Gerrard? I think Brewer the Butcher is p-4-p better than Siler. All of the other three in the top five are much better than Siler. Chris Kenedy, Mike Arrant, The Vise= ALL BETTER THAN Siler. He isn't even the top at his weight. He beat travis. Sweet. But give him a few more fights before you make him TOP OF HIS OWN WEIGHT. Let alone number two in the P-4-P.
« someguy wrote on Thursday, Aug 14 at 12:08 PM »
How does Demarques end up #1 when he has lost in state? Hey may be #1 at his weight but obviously not pound for pound when a weight class he dropped down from has at least 2 guys that would beat him.
« What? wrote on Thursday, Aug 14 at 07:44 AM »
That's why it's so STUPID that Siler is put as #2 for lb for lb. Lb for lb Downey is WAAAAY better than Siler as are Razor and BD. How the hell does Siler get #2? The guys he beat before Marx was Dan Berry and Lance Gorman. That's it. He isn't even the best guy in his weight class. Kauwe is 2 out 3 with him. Sure, he's getting better, but #2 on the pound for pound. That's f*cking stupid. No one put Matt Serra at the top of the rankings after he beat GSP. He was up there, but not at the top. He wasn't even in the conversation for pound for pound. I'm not saying Siler doesn't have the potential, but damn he needs to prove himself by more than one fight. Court McGee, Bradstreet, hell that Gerard Kid is better pound for pound than Siler. Even if Siler wins he doesn't beling in the pound for pound list at all.

With the rankings we thought Olly was not going to be fighting in Utah so we have tried to put fighters currently fighing in Utah. Clearly after this weekend he will be back in the rankings IMO. Siler has improved a lot, we will also know this weekend where he belongs better in the rankings.
« What? wrote on Wednesday, Aug 13 at 08:08 PM »
Siler has lost to Bradstreet THREE times! That is ridiculous to even have Siler's name up there. He has beaten one person of worth. That ranking is retarded.
« Towelie wrote on Wednesday, Aug 13 at 10:31 AM »
Its a good list. I think BD takes it to Razor though. When are we gonna see this fight? I know BD would take this fight at the drop of a hat.

I am happy to see Siler getting respect. He has the right mind set to go far. Stick it to Mamalis, Steve!

DaMarques at number one? Absolutely!
